The Avios family: one currency, five programs

British Airways, Iberia, Qatar Airways, Aer Lingus and Finnair all use Avios, and you can move Avios between your own accounts in them at 1:1, free and instantly (avios.com → Move Avios). So a bank that doesn’t transfer to Qatar or Iberia can still get you there: send the points to British Airways, then move the Avios across. In the table those show as Chase 1:1 via BA.

  • Qatar links only to British Airways, so going to or from Qatar always takes two steps through BA (Qatar may ask for ID the first time). Going through BA works for Finnair too.
  • Each account must be at least 30 days old before it can send or receive Avios, and every account must be in your own name (same name and email).
  • Links are permanent, so link the right account the first time.

Before you transfer: find the seat on the program’s own website first. Transfers usually can’t be undone, and not every program sees every seat. Value is the program’s six-source average.

Ratios from The Points Guy’s transfer chart, checked against NerdWallet’s (October 2026). 5:4 means 1,000 bank points become 800. Hover over or tap a ⚠ to see why it’s flagged (the rate depends on your card, changed recently, or the two charts disagree). Citi ratios are for the Strata Elite and Strata Premier; Citi’s no-fee cards transfer at less. Limited-time transfer bonuses aren’t included.
